Truffula Trees Headband

This is my last year as an elementary school mom and I am more tired than sad. Still, I am trying really hard to muster up some effort for my daughter because I don’t want to regret it later. This was our last Read Across America week. I didn’t even see the daily dress up paper until after she left for school on Wednesday. It was “Wacky Wednesday” but she wore her Starry Night Haze dress with braids, boots, and a lace choker necklace for a Wednesday Adams twist.

Today was “Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character” and she asked for one fish two fish painted on her cheeks like last year. Instead, I suggested a truffula tree headband and she was all for it! We whipped this up in 15 minutes with what we had on hand, but it worked pretty well.

We couldn’t find any colorful pipe cleaners… now that I think about it I am pretty sure the kids used them all to make cat toys… so we used some thin, white ones. To add color I wrapped them with ribbon using hot glue. It would definitely be easier with colored pipe cleaners! They were not quite strong enough to hold the weight of the treetops so I had to add an extra for strength at the end.

Truffula Trees Headband

Supplies:

  • headband

  • pipe cleaners

  • hot glue

  • ribbon (if you can’t find colorful pipe cleaners)

  • styrofoam balls

  • faux fur trim or boas

  • hot glue

Fold a pipe cleaner in half and twist around the headband approximately 1.5-2” from the center. Depending on the strength of the pipe cleaner, multiple pipe cleaners may be added.

If using two colors of pipe cleaners, wrap a second pipe cleaner around the first in a spiral pattern.

If using ribbon, hot glue ribbon around the pipe cleaner in a spiral pattern.

Repeat this process for the second truffula tree trunk, placing it equidistant on the opposite side of the headband.

Use hot glue to wrap fur trim around a styrofoam ball. Poke a hole in one end. Repeat in a different color for the other tree.

Apply hot glue to the hole in the treetop and insert the pipe cleaner trunk. Repeat for the other side.

If the tree needs more support to hold the weight of the treetop, wrap the trunk with an additional pipe cleaner.

I have to admit that it made me giggle to see these through the bus windows as it pulled away. :)

I set up the phone holder to record as we made this so here is a sped up version of the process:

I would have loved to add a bow in the center or a little Lorax printed on cardstock but she didn’t want any of that. If someone else tries it I would love to see it though!
