Project Art Studio: Starry Night

I have always been inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night. In high school we recreated this piece in a blend acrylic and watercolor paint and I loved the feeling of creating in short brush strokes without the pressure of following exact lines. It felt so much more artistic than our usual assignments. I suppose my sewing often has the same approach.

Van Gogh painted this piece while recovering from a mental breakdown. Battling severe depression, he looked out his asylum room window for inspiration. He actually considered this piece to be a failure as it was more imaginative than his usual work. Over 130 years later many consider it to be his best.

With this inspiration, I chose an assortment of gorgeous fabrics from Mily Mae Fabrics that fit the color scheme. They generously sponsored the fabric for my Project Art Studio looks! I actually sewed some other items that didn’t make the photo shoot, but I will be sharing them later.

Each of the girls wanted a Monet Beret. I made them with stretch corduroy and fleece remnants. These are really fast to sew!!!

I sewed a pair of Rocky Shore Tights in black shiny tricot and used light blue for the bottom and waistband. I chose a velvet fabric for a Sundowner Sweatshirt and it is so cozy! I lined the hood with the rest of the light blue tricot so that everything coordinates.

This Van Gogh bag was my hand embroidery project for long car rides to soccer games this fall. I added long stitches replicating pieces of the original artwork.

This tunic length Blank Canvas Cardigan is made from cashmere waffle fabric that is super soft!!!

I was so excited to finally try a Haze dress and I found a lovely crinkle gauze piece that gave it such a lovely texture. Of course I can’t just follow the basic directions so I added lace along the hem. To be honest, I don’t know where the lace came from but I think it was harvested from curtains.

For the back V, I used lace that was originally on the bottom of a bed skirt and just flipped it upside down. I love the lace contrasts and my daughter helped to choose them.

My niece modeled again and she got a velvet Easel Tee in full length, a Blank Canvas Cardigan in the lush rib knit, and Rocky Shore Tights in shiny tricot.

This photo shoot was much different than originally planned, but I think we captured it pretty well! You can get the entire Project Art Studio pattern collection in the Project Run and Play shop!
