Sewing for Mermaids

Project Under the Sea has been such a fun theme for the Project Run and Play team and designers! I was feeling inspired and decided to sew land and sea looks for my daughters and nieces!

If you have seen the new movie, you will notice that the land costumes include pastels, ruffles, and a flowy style. I think that I captured that pretty well in these outfits.

My oldest niece requested the Seaside Shorts and I made these using stretch denim. I did make them a little bigger so they should fit her for a little while longer and I added the belt loops too. Her top is a long sleeve Lagoon in super soft waffle fabric from Mily Mae Fabrics.

My daughter is not a big fan of dresses lately, but she really loves this dress! I used her favorite fabric- brushed poly- in light turquoise from Mily Mae. The full circle high low skirt is her favorite and it just drapes beautifully in this fabric! She loves watching it twirl and flare out as she moves.

My niece is so long and lanky that I thought the elbow length Lagoon sleeves would be nice for her. I used lavender solid brushed poly from Mily Mae Fabrics. Her skirt is the Arista tulle overlay option from Lagoon. I used two layers of white tulle over coral cotton jersey. I also added a shorter layer of lace on top which just made it so extra pretty!

This girl’s closet is too full and the skirt is too good to wear for just one photo shoot! (You can get the details on it HERE.) It is paired with a Reef Top made of seafoam Fluffy from Mily Mae Fabrics.

My youngest niece loves all things fancy and frilly! She got a short sleeve Lagoon top is the new Knit Swiss Dots from Mily Mae Fabrics and I really love this fabric!!! Her Seafoam Skirt has layers of lace over tulle in different colors. I cute the tulle an inch longer than the lace so that it would have an extra tiered effect. The skirt construction makes twirling extra fun because each of the layers spin out!

The underwater looks are full of bold colors to contrast the pastels on land. Each of them got an β€œAriel” mermaid tail and a fun top to coordinate.

The older girls again prefer blues and greens over the pinks and purples so they got darker hues. My niece got this sleek Kira Mangrove Green tail (Mily Mae Fabrics) with black tulle fins. We added some Color Short fabric glitter spray to the fins and bottom of the tail for some extra sparkle - recommended by Isabella from Joann! Her Reef Top is made using a stretch sparkly fabric from Joann. Even though this is a woven pattern it worked perfectly and I didn’t have to hem the flounce! Oh, and I also lengthened it by an inch because of her personal preference.

I have never sewn swim before! I decided to dive in (see what I did there?) with a Pike top. My daughter chose the cropped two piece with the added ruffle. I have her bottoms cut out and ready to sew and she is really excited about the high waisted look! I used Kira Midnight from Mily Mae Fabrics for this look.

My niece loves orange and I thought the Kira Fizzy Fusion was a perfect option for her! It is such a gorgeous color!!! At this point, I discovered that two layers of tulle is even cuter for the tail fins so I used a longer layer of white tulle under the coral sparkly tulle.

When I cleaned my sewing room I found an aqua satin top that I planned to use as an upcycle so I created a Reef Top. The flounce is a little shorter (my sewing error) but the fabric and color are just perfect with her tail!

I also sewed a bow headband using scraps of Mily Mae lilac supplex and added a dolphin button to the center.

I also sewed another first- a separating zipper! The Morgana Zip-Up pattern instructions are so clear and helpful that it was not overwhelming at all! The fabric was leftovers from Project Watercolor Beach. (She was so bummed for grow out of THIS Chromium Cropped Hoodie!) I added glitter iron on vinyl using Project Under the Sea Digital Designs to make it a little more fun!

I really wanted to use the Calliandra pattern for my niece but I already had a Seafoam Skirt cut out for her land outfit. To make it work for the underwater look, I changed it to a top! I added a gathered tier to the bottom instead of the skirt. The flounces are made of tulle (although I wish I had used mesh tulle instead!) In the center of the top, I appliqued a white circle with Armeria embroidery. It was originally going to be the top of a Seashell Satchel, but I really like how it looks like a pearl or bubble as a circle applique.

Her tail is made of Bright Fuchsia Kira and I added layers of aqua and fuchsia sparkle tulle for the fins. I also let the girls take any Ocean Friends Softies that they wanted from my tester pile and she didn’t want to put the mermaid down for pictures. I even got a picture from my sister later and she was holding it as she napped. :)

Thank you to Mily Mae Fabrics for making these mermaid dreams come true!
