Easter Pajamas
/Easter was different this year, wasn’t it?
I decided that I needed to fight for some small bit of normalcy through traditions. The girls and I had “chocolate dipping day” and I sewed something for them.
Let’s be real. Pajamas are the most worn item of clothing in many wardrobe’s these days. Fancy Easter dresses would not have gotten a lot of use. The challenge for me was that sewing supplies are hard to come by. Thankfully, my friend Anita gave me some wide elastic and I have a great stash for upcycles! My very favorite batch of Easter dresses were the ones made of vintage sheets (HERE) and I had a few more sheets in a tote in the shed. (They still smelled like my mom’s laundry!) I found a blue maxi dress that I got for $1 on a thrift store excursion with Anita last year. I actually had quite a few more shirts in the upcycle pile that would have matched, but chose a light blue lace texture one ($2 from the thrift store last summer) to complete the sets.
Since I was going back to my old ways, each of the girls drew a picture of what they wanted, I sewed them all in less than a day, and I made my own "patterns” (but for one!) Actually, I can’t call them patterns because no paper was involved. I just cut and hoped for the best. It worked for most of them.
My oldest daughter wanted a cropped tank top so I just used an Old Navy tank from her closet for a template to cut around. It fit exactly like the tank top, but it turned out the Old Navy tank doesn’t fit that great, so I had to make some adjustments in the arm scythe. For the shorts, I used a pair from her closet as a template that she said fit her, except after I was done she told me they are too big in the waist. I had to do a lot of seam ripping.
The next daughter didn’t want anything. She has a lot of pajamas, but they are winter pajamas, so I made some anyway. Plus, I wanted them all to match. She wouldn’t cooperate when I made the shirt so it is a bit small.
Next up is a cami style tank top that I just made up. It is kind of like a pillow case top, but a crop length. I made bias tape for the straps, but they could be a little longer. The shorts were made from the Starry Night PJs pattern since they were already printed and handy from Christmas PJs.
My youngest wanted fluttery sleeves and eggs, bunnies, and flowers appliqued on the front. Well, you get what you get and you don’t get upset. She got peasant dress but with an added ruffle at the bottom.
The pajamas are getting plenty of wear. The younger three girls kept theirs on all day, even when we went outside for an egg hunt.
Overall, I am pretty happy with how they turned out. It may have been different from other Easters, but we still made the most of the situation. I made old things new, and there is actually a pretty great Easter message hidden there.
