Christmas Pajamas
/Project Run and Play is having a pajama party and I am excited to share my Christmas pajama makes today! Can you believe I was actually invited to a party?!? It is a virtual one, but still…
Surprisingly, until this year, I had never sewn Christmas pajamas for my family. I know some people who make that an annual tradition and thought it sounded great! They sew pajama pants for everyone, but I don’t like making the same thing over and over. I also don’t have any size tags/labels, which makes laundry sorting more difficult. So, of course I had to make the sewing part more complicated by creating coordinating pajamas using 6 different patterns.
Cali Fabrics generously supplied the fabric for these pajamas. I used a pencil stripe modal jersey (which is super soft and has a lovely drape!) and a lightweight poly/rayon green french terry (can you believe I have never sewn with french terry before?!? I was missing out!)
So, here is how things really went…
My 8yo came home one day and said that they were watching The Polar Express in school and allowed to wear their pajamas. She wanted me to sew hers so that she could “show them off,” which is flattering. Oh, but I forgot to mention that the movie was the next day. Ugh. So, I whipped up a pair of Rocky Shore Tights that night (with awesome stripe matching, I might add!) and an Aurora Raglan tunic the next morning before school. These patterns are already fast sews, but I also added bands instead of hems to speed things up further.
Then, I didn’t sew anything else until Christmas Eve.
On Christmas Eve I sewed the following…
I didn’t get done until close to midnight. My youngest daughter had fallen asleep on the couch, so I woke her up, changed her into her nightgown, and sent her up to bed. She obviously didn’t remember and was surprised to wake up in a new nightgown! She came bouncing down the stairs, flapping her arms with the fluttery sleeves saying, “I’m an angel! I’m an angel!” Those sleeves in the modal jersey really are perfection, though! I did change the pattern by making a gathered skirt instead of a circle skirt. It just made sense with the stripes.
To be honest, I didn’t hem anything on that and I probably won’t. It is a nightgown, after all, and I love how light and flowy it turned out anyway.
I also like how the V in the back of the Indigo matches the back of the Tundra sweater. I did the longer length on that one and lengthened it a little more with the band at the bottom because I was just not in the mood to hem. I DID match all of the stripes on the shorts perfectly, so I feel like I was being selectively perfectionistic. Oh, and the shorts are shortened as per her preferences for sleeping.
I also made the Pudding Pants for my 14yo daughter. Again, I made a few adjustments - slimming the fit and adding a cuff to the bottom. I didn’t think she wanted a top, but on Christmas morning she asked where her shirt was, then refused to let me make one for her. Teenagers!!! She wouldn’t fully cooperate for pictures, so this is the best you are getting.
Just to recap everything…
