Fabric Easter Eggs
/Lisa from Postal Threads just released a new fillable fabric egg pattern. She has been making these to sell in her etsy shop, usually from upcycled materials. It has a hidden pocket in the back so they can be filled with surprises and then reused every year. I think they are a lot nicer than plastic eggs and could be used as decorations as well. When she called for testers for her new pdf pattern I was happy to join in!
Then, I got a little bit overambitious. That happens a lot. You see, she asked for a set of 5 eggs and I just happen to have 5 daughters. I pulled out my fabric scraps and realized that the scraps from their 2013 Easter dresses would be PERFECT!
I decided to hand embroider each one with the corresponding daughter’s initial. I used iron on interfacing on the back of each front piece. Each of my designs has a special meaning. (You can click on the image of the original dress to read the blog post on that dress.)
When my oldest daughter was born her brother tried to tell everyone that her name was “Daisy the Flower”. We briefly considered Daisy, but he would not agree to drop “the Flower” so we named her Halley.
The next egg design has a bunny because Isabelle was always wearing her pink bunny ears! I have so many pictures of her wearing those! She wore head to toe pink almost every day, so they matched all of her outfits.
Lydia is my artist, with an eye for detail. Everything she draws has intricate details and her photography captures the tiniest things. Her initial is a vine with little leaves and flowers.
Grace went through a phase when she would steal our eggs and make hidden nests. One time she hid them under a pillow on the couch! She insisted they were her “beeps” and she wanted them to hatch, I suppose. So, she got a chick on her egg.
Finally, Hannah: the last one. I embroidered her egg last, and by then she saw them and had specific instructions for me. She wanted roses. Purple ones. I also made her “H” smaller.
Overall, I LOVE how these turned out. I plan to clip them from a string of twine somewhere in my house to decorate until Easter. Then, I will fill them with surprises for their Easter baskets. I guess they will be like the Christmas version of stockings.
