Little Star Quilt

macinequilting.jpg

As I was stitching on the last little bit of the binding, I realized that I pieced this quilt 8 years ago!  WOW!  It isn't even a large quilt- only about 22 inches on each side.  Talk about procrastination!!!

I like the soft sage green and tan fabrics, but there is not much contrast between these colors.  The piecing is not perfect- I have definitely come a long way in the last 8 years!

I machine quilted it "in the ditch" to get get it DONE!  (I rarely machine quilt, but thankfully I didn't have any trouble with this one.)

I will be donating it to a good cause. :)

It also qualifies as another finish towards my 12in2012 goal of finishing half of the UFO list over there on the sidebar and the Quilter-in-the-Gap 2nd Quarter Finish-A-Long! Two things in one week! WOOHOOHOO!!

Phillies Throwback Quilt

P4268546.jpg

I let my brother-in-law choose the colors for my nephew's baby quilt and he really likes the old school Phillies stuff.  To be honest, I had no idea what "throwback" meant, but I googled it.

Using the 1980's Phillies jerseys as my inspiration, I designed this strip quilt- very different than anything I have made before.  The maroon and white stripes remind me of the sleeves of the jerseys and just look plain ol' sporty!  I got the Robert Kauffmann baseball fabric on a little expedition to a fabric store trip last fall and the rest is just any blue fabrics I could find that resembled the old Phillies colors but did not have flowers.

To try something new, I machine appliqued the baseball bat.  It went OK (I only had to seam-rip and redo half of it), but I would do it differently next time.

I hand appliqued and embroidered the little baseball.  I was going to do more, but I ran out of ambition and thought that one ball made more sense with one bat.  One thing I really like, though, was the quilting on the baseball fabric.  I stitched in the old Phillies logo and on the other strip of baseball fabric, I replicated the lettering to make my nephew's name.

It is not the best quilt I have ever made, but at least it is finally finished (Woohoo!  Check one off for the Finish-a-Long!)  I started it all the way back in November.  I embroidered the back with all of his birth info and a special verse:

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.  James 1:17

So appropriate.  That is my favorite part of this quilt. =)

Naomi's Quilt

Not my best quilt ever, but it is FINISHED!!! AND I got it done BEFORE her first birthday (with 4 hours to spare). I originally wanted to machine quilt this one, but since I can't lower my feed dogs, it was a failure. :( So, rip, rip, rip it was.
Then I hand quilted the cow blocks, but I couldn't figure out how to quilt the red blocks, so I gave up and tied them instead. The back is a cute farm print that I had and the reds are all leftover from a red tractor quilt I made a few years ago (I pieced this top in my "pre-baby rearranging use it or move it sewing stage"). I love the little "moo" fabrics on the border and the red binding, too.

Another project finished! YAAAAAAAAY!!!!!! Only about a million more to go... :)
(Notice the cow in the background looking at me like I am completely crazy!)

Grace's Quilt

TA DA!!!! I started Grace's baby quilt a few weeks before she was born (hence the bright, but neutral colors). I was inspired by Anita's beautiful quilt HERE, but since I don't like to do sashing, I decided to use this Moda Bakeshop pattern, except I cut my own squares instead of using a charm pack.
They are both sooooo cute!!!
See that red pinwheel? Those are what I was cutting when I cut my fingertip with the rotary cutter. :( I hand quilted this, of course. Just oulined the white triangles in the pinwheels and around the border.

When I saw that the 3D triangles were called prairie points I had to try them. Anything with the word "prairie" just sounds adorable and makes me think of Laura Ingalls!

But frankly, they were a pain. I couldn't get the spacing right and the more I tried to fix them, the worse it got. AND I couldn't hand quilt along this edge (which I thought it needed to keep them in place) so I had to stab stitch one stitch at a time the whole way around.
But it is still an awesome pattern and I love it!!!
Link Parties are found at the top of my blog and, if I get a minute here and there, I might be found linking up at some of those.

Flannel Button Quilt

button2Bquilt2B3.jpg

So, my little girl went through a phase where she LOVED pink camouflage. I was on a flannel quit kick, so I decided to make her a pink camo one for her second birthday.
She turned five in December.
You see, I thought it would be absolutely charming and adorable to do a checkerboard pattern and use high-loft batting and sew a button on each square. I was picturing this comfy, cutesy, "Little House on the Prairie" effect. But sewing buttons is a pain in the neck.
So now, 3 1/2 years later, in my "finish up projects so I can make room for Baby #5 kick" I have forced myself to finish it! I only had 21 buttons left to sew on, and it probably took me less than an hour (hanging my head in shame here). The binding only took one dentist appointment and two soccer practices. It is an odd size and the pink in the squares doesn't really match the camo too well, but it was so long ago that I don't know what I was thinking anymore. BUT... YAY for another finish!!! And since she is older now, buttons are probably less of a choking hazard. :)

Butterfly Quilts

I try to make quilts for my new nieces and nephews when they are born. For my niece, Eden, I made this beautiful butterfly quilt, and I used some extra blocks to make a doll-sized version for her older sister, Anna, too.

I used only fabrics I had on hand- I didn't have to buy anything, so it was some major stash-busting! I even used up extra binding that I over-cut from the last quilt and just cut a little more.

I have made butterfly blocks before, but I was inspired by the Moda Bake Shop quilt pattern here. I changed the measurements of my blocks some, though.

I hand quilted inside the butterfly wings and up the middles, and just did X's on the empty blocks (Yes, I am getting lazy here, but that flower one did me in!)

Another finished quilt- actually two!!! YAY!!!

Kelsey's Quilt

I don't believe I have ever shown off one of my quilts on my blog, but I am also a quilter! (Actually, I learned to sew quilts before anything else.) After a really tough Spring semester my sophomore year of college, I sold back all the books I could find from the first two years, went straight to Walmart, and bought the only sewing machine I could afford. That summer, I taught myself to quilt.I made baby quilts for my nieces and nephews, but the pre-quilting era kids have been skipped. So, for the girls, I have been making larger quilts for their 12th birthdays. Kelsey’s was just a bit overdue. I started it in April of 2009 and I just finished it. The piecing went really quickly! Basic nine patches in light blue and lilac, set on point with a cream background.

(The backlight from the window doesn't show this off the best.)

See, it took so long because I like to hand quilt motifs on the open squares. This intricate flower one was totally my own design and each block varies.

I like how the colored thread stands out against the cream fabric.

I put a few butterflies in there, too. I really punished myself with this one, and it would sit for months at a time with me having no ambition to work on it. However, I use washable crayola markers to draw on my quilting lines and after nearly 2 years, it didn't want to wash out! It took a lot of washing and soaking and OxiClean to get most of it out.

This is a terrible cropped in picture, but I designed a little motif to put her name in it that coordinated.

And of course I mitered the corners, too. I handstitch my bindings on around the back. (And that is some of Baby#5 under the green shirt there- makes a nice photo prop!)

I try to embroider a special message on the backs of these, and this one included Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.
So there is my first quilt show-off. Expect more of these because I am trying to catch up on some new baby nieces and also trying to use up lots of quilting stash before I move my sewing table and hubby sees how much I have jammed in there! :)
