Back to School with Boho Fabrics
/It is time to head back to school already! Summer always seems to go by pretty fast. I thought it seemed to go slow (which is exactly how you want your summer days!) but at the same time it was too short to do everything that I hoped we would do.
Back to school time always brings a lot of changes and for my nieces that is especially true… My youngest niece will be attending a traditional classroom for the first time and also losing her spot as the youngest niece when she gets a new baby sister in a few days! My older niece will be adjusting to another year of homeschool with some new challenges added and fewer younger siblings hanging around.
Our back to school photo shoot very much represented change. We only see small changes in a short time but it can be fun to take a few steps back and look at the bigger picture.
We took our photos at the one room schoolhouse near my grandparent’s home. The plate at the top reads “1849” so I assume that was when it was built. My great-grandfather attended this school, so it was very nostalgic to bring the girls here for back to school photos.
Their clothing also has a timeless look! Project Run and Play patterns and Boho Fabrics were the perfect pairing to achieve this effect.
For my older niece I sewed a Lagoon dress with the short puff sleeves and high low fishtail skirt. I have never sewn with cupro fabric and didn't really know what it was so I added it to my cart on a whim! It did NOT disappoint! This fabric is silky smooth with a perfect drape for this dress! For an extra layering piece, I sewed a Blank Canvas Cardigan. I had to omit the hem band because I ran out of fabric (I have more projects to show later!) but it is so soft and cozy in this brushed sweater knit fabric.
My youngest niece got a Lavender dress with long sleeves. This Bachelor Button Woven Prada Twill fabric will be perfect for cooler fall days and the best part is that it never wrinkles! I sewed the lace to the bodice instead of creating an inset because it was too narrow but it gives the same effect. For the skirt, I lowered the lace inset for my personal preference. I also sewed a pair of Elodie shorts underneath for a little extra coverage while roughhousing on the playground. The navy cotton spandex knit worked perfectly!
I also made a matching lace hair bow and will have the video tutorial posted soon!
I think the girls really liked their new outfits and getting an up close look at a piece of family history.
