Matching Girl and Doll Hats

doll-and-girl-crochet-hats.jpg

Since I was on a doll hat crocheting kick and my 9yo could use a new hat for playing in the snow, I ended up making a matching girl and doll set! I let her pick the yarn and I think they came out pretty cute! I used Charisma yarn from Michaels and it makes such a soft, fluffy pom pom on top of the hat! I used one skein to make both hats. As for sizing, it fits my 6yo and my 9yo but is too big for my 4yo and too small for me. So, I would call it a child's size hat.

hdc= half double crochet sl st= slip stitch ch= chain

I used Charisma yarn from Michaels and a size K hook. I kept my tension pretty loose for this hat. You can also use a larger hook- I have used an N hook to get a looser stitch. If it seems to be too small, add an extra increasing round after round 5 to make it bigger in diameter and add extra rows to the bottom to make it smaller. If in doubt always try to err on the small side for diameter because these hats will stretch.

Round 1: Make a magic loop/ring (Google it- it is awesome!) and ch 1, 6 hdc in loop. Sl st in the ch and pull yarn end to tighten. (7 hdc)

Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in same sl st as joining, 2 hdc in each hdc around, join with sl st to second ch in beginning ch 2. (14 hdc)

Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in same sl st as joining, *hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, join with sl st to second ch in beginning ch 2. (21 hdc)

Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in same sl st as joining, *hdc once in each of the next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, join with sl st to second ch in beginning ch 2. (28 hdc)

Round 5: Ch 2, hdc in same sl st as joining, *hdc once in each of the next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, join with sl st to second ch in beginning ch 2. (35 hdc)

Round 6-13: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc around, join with sl st to second ch in beginning ch 2. (28 hdc)

Round 14:  Ch 2, hdc in each hdc around, join with sl st to second ch in beginning ch 2. Fasten off. (28 hdc)

For the pom pom ball on top- wrap yarn around four fingers about 75-100 times. Tightly tie a 12" piece of yarn around the center of the wrapped yarn (between the two fingers). Cut the centers of the loops on each side of the center knot. Fluff well. :) Take the long ends of the yarn used to tie the pom pom loops and insert one on each side of the hat between the first and second rounds. Knot these strings on the inside of the hat. This should be done very firmly and carefully and may not be suitable for small children to play with in case the pom pom would come loose.
